Celebrating Our Female Makers

International Women’s Day 2024

International Women’s Day is a day to spread the message of gender equality and to celebrate women. We are a female owned business and we are committed to supporting amazing women who make beautiful things.

According to the National Museum of Women in the Arts women make up 51% of visual artists. However when it comes to gallery representation and exhibitions these number are much less. For example in London, 78% of galleries represent more men than women and only 5% represent an equal number of male and female artists.

So for International Women’s Day we are going to put a spotlight on female artists that we are prod to stock at LAMP.

Print Sisters

Print Sisters Archive was founded in 2020 by the creative sister duo Alexia and Claudia. Born during the initial lockdown, this small, independent, female-led company curates an extensive collection of rare artworks, historical prints, and timeless textile patterns. Their ethos revolves around celebrating craftsmanship, blending creativity with heritage, and embodying a sense of timeless style. Through reviving vintage prints, they manifest their passion for fashion, interior design, and a commitment to environmental consciousness, offering accessible art to all.

Working from an archive of rare textiles artworks, the unique handcrafted designs spans from the 1800s to the 1970s. They meticulously restore and rework designs paying homage to the original artists and artistic movements whilst adding a contemporary touch. The collection was originally sourced from French textile manufacturers predominately from Lyon and near by textile regions, whilst also featuring vintage textile samples from Belgium, Italy and Britain.

Nestled in Hackney, London, their studio sees a hands-on collaboration, incorporating digital restoration, creative enhancements and curation of unique elements within each print. The selection and development of each piece is intensional and unrushed, drawing inspiration from seasons, films and exhibitions. Guided also by their Belgium heritage, trips to Brussels and their grandmother’s influence, a profound love for Art Nouveau and Art Deco can be recognised throughout their works.

Committed to sustainability, each print has a limited edition of 500 and are printed with 100% recycled and sustainable papers. They are also partnered with Tree Sisters, a charity that funds ethical, community-led planting projects that take direct climate action, empower women and champion local and indigenous communities.

Ellen Merchant

Ellen Merchant creates uplifting interior textiles, wallpaper and prints with a decorative aesthetic that pays homage to the British Arts and Craft movement. Using traditional techniques, each piece begins as a drawing, sketch or small watercolour, with every step prioritising the integrity and character of the hand-made process. Ellen finds the perfect balance between contemporary design and traditional decoration, with stunning colour combinations and a profound love of pattern.

Originally from Dorset, Ellen moved to London to study at both Central Saint Martins and Camberwell College of Art. After graduating and working as a print designer for fashion, it became clear to Ellen that she wanted to create textiles with real purpose and longevity. Wishing to strengthen her understanding of her practice, Ellen attended the Royal College of Art in 2019 achieving an MA in Textiles. Ellen established her London studio in 2021 with a mission to offer timeless, quality interior textiles. Each piece is designed and produced in England using traditional techniques, resulting in decorative designs that are alive with the spirit of making.

Stoff Studios

Stoff Studios was founded in 2015 by Carys Briggs, a textile designer who trained at both the Royal College of Art and Central St Martins. Now based in their river-side studio in Woolwich, London, they create a range of printed items including cushions, lampshades and prints.

They use traditional methods of printing with the majority of their works being produced by hand, including cutting prints and hand painting sections of wallpapers. Each item is produced in small batches or made to order, creating a refined and intimate collection of textiles and home-wares that have been meticulously crafted.

Stoff Studios take a humble approach to their practice, drawing inspiration from the materials that they work with. Fabric pieces are inspired by gestural mark making and mono printing techniques, which are then translated into silk screen prints. Repeating patterns and plains of colour can be seen throughout all their work showcasing a strong sense of identity, whilst designing to work together in the home to create reoccurring motifs. They aim to produce a thoughtful collection led by curiosity and enthusiasm for making.
